The Public Council of Rosatom State Nuclear Energy Corporation was set up in Feb 2006 for jointly discussing with Russian and international public organizations problems related to the activities and development prospects of nuclear companies, to nuclear and radiation safety, to social security in territories hosting nuclear facilities. The Public Council comprises representatives of federal public organizations, members of the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, experts and managers of scientific organizations.

The Public Council was designed as a public forum for a dialogue among the Federal Agency for Nuclear Energy, the expert community and NGOs.

The Public Council has the following tasks:

• to improve Rosatom’s cooperation with public and ecological organizations and citizens in the regions of the Russian Federation in developing a general policy in the field of peaceful use of nuclear energy, environment protection and nuclear and radiation safety;

• to support Rosatom in solving social problems in territories hosting nuclear facilities and in enhancing its transparency at the current stage in line with the international practice and present-day realities.

In order to solve these tasks the Public Council:

• implements social projects
• cooperates with NGOs
• informs the public of the key activities of Rosatom in the field of peaceful use of nuclear energy.

Rosatom’s shows a highly responsible approach to some of its social projects: rehabilitation of children living in the basin of Techa River (villages of Muslumovo, Brodokalmak, Russkaya Techa, N.Petropavlovskoye) at sea resorts of the Black Sea (Sochi, Alushta, Anapa) and organization of creative contests and poetry and paining master-classes for children from participant territories.

Presently, the Public Council is opening regional offices. There already are public councils in Irkutsk and Murmansk regions. Very soon similar councils will be opened in Chelyabinsk, Kaliningran and Arkhangelsk
